Jamming Together: Memphis Jazz Workshop Big Band

The Big Band Youth Ensemble brings together talented young musicians to explore the rich tradition of jazz while developing advanced ensemble skills. Students will perform classic big band repertoire as well as contemporary works, learning improvisation, section playing, and the art of swing.

🎶 Audition Requirements

Students must prepare:

  • One prepared piece (jazz standard or band piece of your choice) that demonstrates tone, technique, and style.

  • Major scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats.

  • Sight-reading excerpt provided at the audition.

  • Improvisation (optional but encouraged) – 12-bar blues or a jazz standard of your choice.

Eligibility: Open to middle and high school students (grades 7–12).

🗓 Rehearsals

  • Day: Saturdays

  • Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (2 hours)

  • Location: Southwest Tennessee Community College-Union Avenue Campus

  • Students are expected to attend rehearsals weekly and come prepared with music and instrument.

  • Special guest artist workshops
