Who Can Audition
Memphis Jazz Workshop welcomes students ages 10–18 who are interested in learning, performing, and growing as jazz musicians. Students of all experience levels are encouraged to audition.
Audition Overview
Auditions are required for placement in MJW ensembles and programs. The audition process helps us ensure each student is placed in an ensemble that best supports their musical growth.

What to Prepare
Students should come prepared to demonstrate their current skill level. Auditions are supportive and educational in nature.
Please prepare:
- A short major scale (concert pitch preferred)
- A prepared piece or jazz excerpt (1–2 minutes)
- Improvisation (if applicable; beginners are welcome)
- Sight-reading may be included
- Rhythm section players may be asked to demonstrate time feel and basic comping
Students do not need to be expert improvisers to audition.

- Guitar
- Bass (upright or electric)
- Drums
- Vocalists
What to Expect
Auditions are brief, friendly, and low-pressure. Our faculty aims to:
- Assess musical fundamentals
- Encourage confidence and growth
- Place students in the appropriate ensemble level
Parents are welcome to attend Audition Day, there will be a parent meeting from 12-1pm on January 24th
Parent FAQs
Do students need prior jazz experience?
No. Students do not need prior jazz experience to audition. We welcome beginners through advanced players. The audition helps us place each student in the ensemble best suited for their current level.
What if my child is nervous about auditioning?
Auditions are designed to be encouraging and low-pressure. Our faculty focuses on understanding where each student is musically and helping them grow, not on perfection.
Can my child audition if they have only played for a short time?
Yes. As long as the student has basic familiarity with their instrument, they are encouraged to audition.
What happens after the audition?
After auditions, families will be notified of placement, ensemble level, rehearsal schedule, and next steps for enrollment.
What is the time commitment?
MJW typically meets on Saturdays and includes weekly rehearsals, music instruction, and periodic performances throughout the season.
Is the audition fee refundable?
No. The $75 audition fee is non-refundable and is required to hold an audition slot.
Are scholarships available?
Limited financial assistance may be available. Families are encouraged to inquire directly with MJW for more information.
