Memphis Jazz Workshop
Memphis Jazz Workshop – Our Story at a Glance
From one musician’s vision to a thriving community of young jazz artists
2009–2015
The Genesis
The spark in New York, the move to Memphis.
While teaching and performing in New York, Founder Stephen Lee draws inspiration from seeing young, highly trained jazz students. He sees how masterclasses and mentorship shape both musicianship and life skills. In 2009, he relocates to Memphis and begins teaching in public schools and arts nonprofits. He recognizes a gap: no dedicated space for young musicians to deeply study the history, language, and legacy of jazz.
