MEMPHIS JAZZ WORKSHOP’S COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Piano Classes:  This course is designed for students who wish to develop basic piano playing skills, or expand on their existing skills.  While playing, students will be working individually and in small groups to master the techniques of playing and to learn pieces. The is designed for the student with no piano experience.  These are self-paced classes that will assign students to practice on a daily basis to the best of their ability. The teacher will circulate around the room, listening to students playing their lessons.  For all levels of experience and instruments.  

Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Improvisation Classes:  These classes will introduce students to common improvisation skills and techniques based on their level of experience.  Emphasis will be placed on learning scales, modes, chord construction, music reading and practice techniques.  For all levels of experience and instruments.  

Memphis Jazz Workshop Master Classes:  Students will cover the basics of technique, exercises to improve sound, tone production, finger efficiency, phrasing, articulation, musical styles, performance etiquette, etc. Music reading and jazz theory will also be included along with how to construct an improvised solo.  For all levels of experience (beginners, intermediate and advanced). 

Guest Musician Master Classes:   These master classes will feature national and internationally known musicians.  These master classes will give students an opportunity to see, hear and interact with master artists.  The topics that will be discussed will include performance techniques, musical philosophy, jazz history, and the future of the professional musicians, etc. These master classes will offer our students an excellent opportunity to witness first hand the jazz tradition in hope of passing it on to help preserve this tradition. Our Master Class Series have featured Jazz greats like Ron Carter, Donald Brown, Camille Thurman, Randy Brecker, Warren Wolf, Neal Caine, Bob Minzter, Nicholas Payton, Vincent Herring, Benny Green, Carmen Lundy, Lewis Nash, Bobby Watson, Sherman Irby, Marvin Stamm,and Jarrard Harris.  For all levels of experience and instruments.  

Small Ensembles/Combos:  These ensembles will rehearse traditional jazz standards along with other contemporary tunes from the jazz idiom.  Rehearsals will include the playing of tunes with an emphasis on improvising in a smaller group format.  

Larger Ensembles/Big Bands:   In these ensembles, students will learn to perform a variety of styles of jazz compositions for the larger ensemble. Students will have a chance to develop a sense of cohesiveness and a commitment to performance excellence during rehearsal and performance preparation.
